The Art of the Endgame is an English-language hardcover chess book by Jan Timman, devoted to endgame studies, analysis and composition. This revised and expanded edition updates the original material with corrected studies and new additions throughout.
What this book is about
Jan Timman has long been fascinated by the art of endgame study, and this book brings together selected studies by other authors with his own clear explanations. He shows how close analysis of existing ideas can lead to fresh compositions of his own.
The result is a book that connects practical chess thinking with the artistic side of the endgame. It gives readers a chance to work through interesting positions while following the ideas, precision and creative method behind them.
Revised and expanded edition
First published in 2011, this edition has been revised by Jan Timman with the help of chess engines. As a result, some studies were corrected or found to have alternative solutions. Six studies were removed, six were replaced with improved versions, and 14 new studies were added, including two published here for the first time.
That makes this more than a simple reprint. It is a carefully updated edition for readers who value accurate analysis and current material on chess endgames.
About the author
Jan Timman is a former World Championship Candidate and reached second place in the FIDE rankings. He is also the author of respected books such as Timman’s Titans and Max Euwe’s Best Games. In 2022, he received the title FIDE Master of Composition.
