The Complete French Advance: The Most Uncompromising Way to Attack the French Defence is a chess opening book on the Advance Variation against the French Defence, written for players who want a clear White repertoire and a practical way to meet 1.e4 e6.
What this book covers
The authors go beyond move-by-move theory and explain the strategic plans and typical motifs that shape the variation for both sides. That makes the book useful not only for memorising lines, but also for understanding the positions that arise after the opening.
Grandmaster Evgeny Sveshnikov, long regarded as a leading expert on this line, used the Advance Variation successfully in his own tournament practice. Together with his son, International Master Vladimir Sveshnikov, he expanded and updated the earlier analysis from their first book on the system, originally published in 2003. The result is a refreshed repertoire book with annotated games, new ideas and a practical approach to the whole variation.
Inside the book
You will find a large number of annotated grandmaster games that explain the key ideas in a clear, structured way. The book also includes exercises and test positions, helping you reinforce the material and check your understanding as you study.
It is a strong choice for club players, ambitious amateurs, coaches and stronger players who want to build or update a repertoire against the French Defence. For practical preparation, it also fits well into regular opening study for club and tournament play.
For related study, you may also want to look at other books in the same opening series.
About the authors
Evgeny Sveshnikov was a long-time coach of world champion Anatoly Karpov and one of the most respected opening specialists in chess. He is also the author of The Complete c3 Sicilian, The Grand Prix Attack and Sveshnikov vs. the Anti-Sicilians. Vladimir Sveshnikov is an International Master and experienced chess coach. Together they also wrote A Chess Opening Repertoire for Blitz and Rapid.
