This Making My Move: The Autobiography of a Chess Grandmaster and FIDE Executive is an English-language paperback that combines Victor Bologan’s personal story with annotated games and a close look at professional chess, FIDE work and chess politics.

    What this book covers

Bologan traces his path from an ambitious young player growing up in Moldova to an internationally successful grandmaster. Along the way, he writes about working with respected trainers such as Vyacheslav Chebanenko, Zigurds Lanka and Mark Dvoretsky, as well as his experiences with leading players including Alexander Morozevich, Ruslan Ponomariov, Vladimir Kramnik and Garry Kasparov.

The book goes beyond tournament memories. It also covers his work as Executive Director of FIDE and his involvement in Moldovan public life, giving readers a broader view of what a professional chess career can include.

    Annotated games and key results

At the heart of the book is Bologan’s chess career. He revisits major results such as his Dortmund 2003 victory, where he beat both Viswanathan Anand and Vladimir Kramnik, as well as his win at Aeroflot Open 1995 in Moscow and his two victories in Poikovsky.

For readers who enjoy game analysis, the book also includes commentary on 88 of the author’s best and most attractive games. That makes it both a memoir and a substantial collection of annotated games.

Victor Bologan is also known to readers of New In Chess for titles such as The Chebanenko Slav, The Rossolimo for Club Players, The Powerful Catalan, Bologan's King's Indian, Bologan's Caro-Kann, Bologan's Ruy Lopez for Black and Bologan's Black Weapons in the Open Games.
