This Grandmaster Preparation: Strategic Play is an English-language hardcover chess book by Jacob Aagaard, written for ambitious players who want to sharpen their strategic decision-making at the board.
What the book covers
In Strategic Play, Aagaard tackles one of the most demanding areas of chess training: understanding positions well enough to make better decisions, not just calculate variations or memorise opening lines. The book uses games and exercises that encourage deeper analysis and help organise your thinking during play.
It is another volume in the respected Grandmaster Preparation series, building on the material from earlier titles. Aagaard’s direct, practical style makes difficult ideas easier to follow and more useful in tournament preparation.
About the author
Jacob Aagaard is a grandmaster who won the British Championship on his first and only appearance in the event. He is the only chess book author to have received both the Boleslavsky Medal and the Guardian, ECF and ChessCafe Book of the Year awards. He also holds the title of FIDE Senior Trainer.
After ending his playing career, he became coach to the Danish elite. His training material is used by club players, grandmasters and world champions alike.
