This Grandmaster Preparation - Calculation (2nd edition) by Jacob Aagaard is an English-language hardcover chess training book for ambitious players who want to sharpen their calculation and make better decisions at the board. This second edition combines structured training material with exercises that help you think more efficiently in practical play.
What this book covers
Jacob Aagaard focuses on how to organise your thinking in a real game, not just on calculating more lines. The book is aimed at players who spend a long time analysing positions only to realise that much of that work was not especially useful. Here, the emphasis is on a clearer process, better selection of ideas and a more disciplined approach to calculation.
The material covers candidates, combinations, prophylaxis, comparison, elimination, intermediate moves, imagination and traps. It is not limited to theory: the book also includes well-chosen chess training exercises that help turn the ideas into practical work over the board.
The Grandmaster Preparation series is designed for players who take improvement seriously. As Boris Gelfand notes in the foreword, there is no shortcut to the grandmaster title, but there is a well-known path that many strong players have followed, and Jacob Aagaard offers guidance along part of that journey.
About the author
Jacob Aagaard is a grandmaster who won the British Championship on his first and only attempt. He is also a recipient of the Guardian, ECF and ChessCafe Book of the Year awards, and holds the title of FIDE Senior Trainer. His training material is used by both club players and grandmasters.
This is a book for players who want real progress in their study of chess, especially those looking to strengthen calculation, discipline in thinking and the quality of their positional analysis.
